Some, er, Movies
I haven't made it to many of the Paramount's summer series yet (they tend to show a lot of the same flicks every year), but a couple 1933 gems serve as ample reminder that most of the innovations made in sound cinema happened in the first couple years, and we've mostly been treading water for the last 70 years. BOMBSHELL proves that celebrity fame-is-hell comedies have a much longer history that one might expect, and that Jean Harlow deserved a much longer history herself. A stellar performance from Barbara Stanwyck in BABY FACE is hardly cause for surprise, but I do wish more plots were set in motion by old Nietzsche readers urging women to "Use men! Use men!" And when Stanwyck responds with "Yeah," you know she means it.
As for the modern world, I checked out the new DIE HARD, and there will always be a place in my heart for ridiculous stunts (Let's blow up a freeway overpass! Or five!) and fake computer drama ("It's an e-bomb!"). And somehow they managed to go the whole movie without letting Justin Long even look at a Mac computer - strong resolve.
And I suppose I'm already singing in the choir for SICKO, though I'm not all that psyched about Moore being the spokesman for my ideals (can't Jon Stewart also start making documentaries?). But any American who ever makes fun of France should have to watch this several times, or at least until they can admit that things like free universal health care, free higher education, shorter work weeks, 6 weeks of annual vacation, and good food and wine are actually not that weird to desire. Of course, they did duck out of the Iraq war, bizarrely, and I'm sure there's still some huge regrets about that. "But, but, but, they have higher taxes!" True, and their government also provides many useful services to their citizens, and doesn't spend quite so much on new warplanes and invasions. It's almost like they have all agreed to live in, and help fund, a "society" of some kind. Wackos.

Almost There...
To give some context, my oldest niece just turned 2, and my oldest nephew will be 1 in a few days, and the idea to move back to Minnesota from Austin came up around the time we found out about his future arrival. So, like, a year and a half maybe? Oy. Too long to think and talk about one subject without actually doing much about it. And there's already another nephew up there now, and two more coming this fall. Babies certainly do make it easier to keep track of time passing - see, I knew they were good for something.
Anyway, even with that much advance thinking time, I know these remaining weeks in Austin will go by in a blur, and I'll probably be gone before I really start to process it. I've lived here since late 1994, and Roger since 1993, so it has definitely felt like home for quite some time. But we're also both excited about Minneapolis - a new place for Roger, and what may as well be for me, given how different it will be after 13 years (also this time around I can afford to have a freaking garage). And Austin will then move into a handy slot for quick trips - what with all the various festivals, there will always be a good excuse to come for a visit. Not to mention the whole +30 degree temperature difference, which might sound pretty good around March.
Tying this to a more well-known Austin phenomenon, perhaps it is fitting that this is also the last week for the original Alamo Drafthouse location after a truly heroic 10-year run. Fortunately they aren't disappearing, but just closing one spot and opening in another later this year. But it'll make it a good clean break for me, as that seems to be where I spend lots of my rec time anyway, and this way I won't have to get all my memories mixed up. Packing everything into the right box, that's the whole idea behind moving, right?

So here's the movies I witnessed and can testify to:
Saturday:
The Ten (B+)
Tailor-made for the you-know-who-you-are fans of the State/Stella bunch, in this case the ten commandments serve as the springboard for numerous non-sequiturs and silliness. So the "covet your neighbor's wife" one takes place in a prison, "keep holy the Sabbath" follows a man who hosts nude Roberta Flack listening parties, etc. Yes, this is the cop-out of all types of reviews, but honestly, if you like this kind of stuff you will like this (I mostly did, like usual), and if you don't you won't. Though it will probably be our best chance to watch Winona Ryder going at it with a ventriloquist's dummy, unless her career gets even stranger. Also it has Paul Rudd which turned out to be a premonition of things to come.
Elvis and Annabelle (B)
In this year's "locally made film" slot, we find this appealing-enough oddball romance. Max Minghella could yet outrun his father's shadow as he maintains a certain gravity without seeming too humorless, and Blake Lively, in the role of a beauty queen trying to escape her image, actually manages the trick herself. And while I admit to a cringe when I first saw that Joe Mantegna was playing a brain-damaged humpback, anticipating a whirlwind of acting tics, I gotta say he made it work. The story is nothing new and often unbelievable (is this supposed to take place in the present day??) but avoids the majority of the traps it lays out for itself. So hey.
Manufacturing Dissent (C+)
Turns out Michael Moore has stretched a few truths (and told a few outright lies) in his various quests, which while hardly noble, produces more irritation than outrage in me. What supposedly began as an admiring bio-doc turns into more of a slam book as Moore repeatedly ducks the filmmakers' camera and questions - um, perhaps he was concerned about participating in another movie that attacks his credibility? And it turns out he was right? The crew don't come up with that many revelations or insights; I think a more interesting topic could be how Moore has "branded" himself to bring attention to his causes, and the ways that strategy has succeeded and backfired. I'll look for that doc next year.
Sunday:
Silver Jew (B)
David Berman of the "band" Silver Jews goes on a tour to Israel, after recently converting to Judaism. I was only slightly familiar with his music (which is not the focus of the movie either) but seeing him discover his Israeli fanbase while simultaneously research his faith produces a few remarkable moments, though it's a bit like watching someone else eat a fantastic meal. Better for the subject than the spectator, I expect.
Diggers (B)
An unexpected (by me) rainstorm detoured me into this movie, but it must have been Paul Rudd turning the wheels of fate. Featuring several of the same folks from The Ten, and written by Statester Ken Marino, this one eschews absurdity for low-key character dramedy. Set in 1976 amidst a community of clamdiggers, the movie doesn't bite off all that much, but chews it well - Marino clearly has a ball playing a foul-mouthed irritable father, and Josh Hamilton, Ron Eldard and Mr. Rudd easily create a sense of genuine camaraderie, laced through with the inevitable annoyances that come from spending too much time with the same people. A subplot with Lauren Ambrose never really cooks, though, and for a while I was predicting way too many of the story's turns, but altogether it slides down easily. Yes like a clam.
Hannah Takes The Stairs (B)
Hmm, I'm all for the recent micro-wave of shoestring video productions, I suppose (though just putting the same stuff on film a la Mutual Appreciation sure helps), but you won't need a director Q&A to understand that this movie was mostly made up as they went along. Yes, the awkward dialogue feels pretty real, but it can also get a little tiring waiting for someone to actually say something. The movie certainly nails the weird intimacy of many new relationships, but couldn't it have done that and told more of a story at the same time?
Monday:
Kurt Cobain About a Son (A-)
A bit skeptical about this as it kicked off, but was soon won over by this movie's unusual approach - while we hear taped interviews with Cobain, director Schnack fills in impressionistic footage of Cobain's Washington stomping grounds, sometimes aligning with the interview subjects, sometimes not. Anyone looking for a fact-filled explanation of Cobain's life will leave frustrated (and I can only imagine Nirvana die-hards getting much out of this at all), but this style evocatively captures the atmosphere in which he lived it.
Knocked Up (B+)
Hey, it's Paul Rudd - where has that guy been hiding lately? Judd Apatow takes a big directorial step forward from 40 Year Old Virgin (as in this movie doesn't look all flat and washed out) while maintaining his enviable laff ratio. Ace sideman Seth Rogen moves to the forefront this time, as an immature lout who fornicates with Katherine Heigl (I haven't watched her doctor show so she was new to me) and from there the title should clue you in. A little longish (c'mon Judd, I know you can dip below the 2-hour mark) but consistently funny and realisticish-enough, considering one of the characters works for E! And any "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" aficionados will surely enjoy seeing what the old gang is up to now - little did they know they all have acting jobs for life.
Tuesday:
Scott Walker: 30 Century Man (B+)
A helpful overview of the unusual career of this equally unusual musician. Moving from his teen magazine cover days of the mid-1960's through his increasingly experimental solo albums (now coming about one every 10 years), the highlight of the movie is simply Walker himself. Listening to his recent music (made with such "instruments" as a slab of raw beef ribs), one might expect to find him an inscrutable, messed-up weirdo, but Walker is open, thoughtful, and never less than engaging when describing his various ups and downs and musical philosophies. Added to this are some unexpectedly intriguing scenes featuring several of Walker's many famous fans just sitting and listening to his songs. It sounds silly, but the movie establishes that David Bowie or the Radiohead guys hear music in a different way than the average layman. If nothing else, hopefully this will help Walker dig further out of the underground - his musical output of the late 60's and early 70's holds its own with anything from that era, and still sounds as fresh today.

SXSW Film - Chapter 2
Monday:
Manhattan, Kansas (B-) - Why people feel the urge to videotape their worst "I need therapy" moments continues to confound me, but I thought I'd stretch my boundaries a bit. Here we have a mid-20's woman returning to visit her mother in rural Kansas. Supposedly Mom is an undiagnosed mental monster, and our heroine is going back for... what exactly? To get revenge? Expose her personal traumas to the world? In any case, while her mother clearly lives an unconvential life (lots of leftover hippie vibes) and may not have been the best caretaker for a youngster, neither does she come across as destructive. If anything, the daughter's tendency to turn every conversation into a confrontation seemed like the source of much of their conflict. It's the type of family bickering that I would turn away from if witnessed in a restaurant, but I guess putting it up on screen lets us stare without embarrassment. Or less, anyway.
The OH in Ohio (B-) - Amusing but far too scattered tale of a woman (Posey) seeking her first genuine orgasm, first using mechanical assistance, and finally an actual man (DeVito, in an underwritten, straaaaaange role). High-pitched set pieces abound, and Posey throws herself into every moment, but in general the subplot with her now-ex-husband (Rudd) felt more satisfying, perhaps because he seemed to exist in reality, instead of Comedy! Land!
Tuesday:
Maxed Out (B+) - Doc about credit card debt, which thankfully moves quickly beyond the obvious points (uh, debt is bad) and looks more at the system that creates and sustains the situation (hint: for credit card companies, debt is good!). Still pretty one-sided, but then banks and credit card companies may not feel any need to defend themselves, or are too busy writing federal bankruptcy legislation. More affecting are the (sadly many) portraits of lives shattered by financial pressures, in most cases over sums that wouldn't even register on a billion-dollar bank's statements.
Wednesday:
V For Vendetta (B-) - You know it's a serious graphic novel film adaptation when the literary references and 50-cent words fly faster than the knives and bullets. I read the Alan Moore book years ago, and while he's certainly a wordy fellow, I suspect the Wachowski brothers may be more to blame for the film's more ponderous moments. Fortunately there's also plenty of over-the-top political statements (sigh, the government still can't be trusted) and slo-mo fight scenes for distraction. More thoughtful than the average action flick, perhaps, but I think Orwell's legacy is still safe.

SXSW Film - Episode 1
Friday:
Old Joy (A-) - A simple and effective look at ongoing friendships, and how they flourish or disintegrate. Will Bonnie Prince Palace Etc. Oldham makes a strong return to the screen, and Daniel London provides a quiet intensity that gives their every unspoken exchange additional power. Beautiful yet unfussy photography and a good doggie help support the film's yearning feeling that maybe there is another, better America out there, but it remains just scarcely out of reach.
L'Enfant (B+) - More prizewinning, unblinking bleakness from the Dardennes. It doesn't take long to recognize which child the title refers to, and you know things have turned a corner when the audience is rooting for the protagonist to get arrested. Please, anything, just get this desperate stupid person off the streets!
Saturday:
Things That Hang From Trees (C) - Okay, we've got our set of one-dimensional oddball characters, we're good to go. What's that? Stuff needs to happen to them? Shoot, I knew we forgot something...
Al Franken: God Spoke (B) - Hard to distinguish this from what a long commercial for Al Franken would look like, but maybe that's the idea. The film flits over some episodes that could have been explored further (launching Air America, especially) in favor of Franken sparring with old faves Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity et al. Fans and detractors should at least now feel safe in believing that yes, his public persona is the real deal.
Tales of the Rat Fink (B) - Another skim-along doc that I wish had delved more, but when the subject of the movie (Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth) passed away early on in the project, I can see how that may have thrown a wrench into things. As it stands, the movie provides a creatively illustrated overview of all things Rat Fink (monster t-shirts, hot rods, fantasy cars) without ever telling us too much about Roth himself. But hey Ken Burns, this is how you liven up stock photos.
Sunday:
Friends With Money (B) - An amusing continuation of Holofcener's previous work, and one's mileage will vary in exact accordance to whether they consider listening to upper-middle-class folks complain entertaining or irritating. I'm a bit split; could have done without the fakey movie jobs (screenwriters, clothing designers, beauty product producers - geez, this creative class thing is out of hand), but the stellar cast squeezes out honesty and nuance time and again.
The Cassidy Kids (B) - The annual "let's try an Austin-made movie" experiment went much better than usual, as this eschews typical indie topic areas ("A struggling musician/screenwriter goes on a personal journey...") and instead presents a layered, time-jumping story of childhood adventures and adulthood mundanities. A few logical gaps (I couldn't see why some of the kids' lingering mysteries wouldn't have been resolved long ago) slow things down towards the end, but for the most part it hums along nicely. Good job locals.
Even Money (C) - Another gambling movie where no one wins (not even the house) - surprise! Starts off relatively solid, but devolves into much soapy shouting and odd mannerism contests between the likes of Roth and Grammer (and yes, Roth wins again). Better luck next time.

It's Hard Out Here For A Bump
So yeah, watched the Oscars... why'd they have to go and hire Jon Stewart and tempt me back into watching, after I was starting to wean myself off? Oh well, he did bring in a few choice bits (I could have watched the attack ads all night) and kept the flow going, but the awards, even with the "surprise" Best Picture, were snoozy. Since half the Academy was either in or friends with the cast of Crash, that win makes sense on many levels beyond some sort of dis on Brokeback (uh, if the Academy hated gays, I don't think they would have even nominated the thing), and either way the voters get to join hands and celebrate their inspiring Tolerance. For some serious Crash bashing, check out Matt Zoller Seitz (and that was before it won); I'll be over here trying to work up some shock and surprise that the Oscars rewarded an undeserving flick. Up is down, etc.

KISS KISS, BANG BANG
The plot eventually gives THE BIG SLEEP a run for its money in generating confusion, but if that gives us more time with this odd detective team, not a problem. A little like Altman's THE LONG GOODBYE, and clearly a mash note to Raymond Chandler, CHINATOWN, and 50's pulp novels in general - something about Los Angeles seems to inspire unshaven, shambling guys to investigate crimes - but with several notebooks of millennial movie in-jokes and genuine surprises thrown in. Go Go See See.

Tarantino Comes To Town
Having seen a few of these festivals over the years, it's been funny to watch the progression of QT from supernova to curiosity to now, perhaps most appropriately, an enthusiastic curator. There is still the occasional starstruck fan (or oddball who simply must be allowed to talk to him about Wal-Mart and religious cults in Arkansas - I'm sure he'll clear that up in a snap), but most of the audience seems to view him more like a groovy uncle than a Hollywood god.
A few other celebs have been around, but for the life of me I cannot think of a good conversation starter for the RZA. He'd see through me, I feel sure.

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

Fortunately this has almost become a regular summer treat - SINGIN' IN THE RAIN at the Paramount Theatre. I saw the movie for the first time there years ago and was all but skipping down the street afterwards, and even with several viewings the effects have not diminished much. Imagine if the people making every movie worked and worked until they had designed every moment of every scene to achieve maximum pleasure for the audience. Hey, maybe it's true; no one sets out to make a bad movie, of course. But it also seems too few are willing to put this much care into making a good one either. Kelly, O'Connor (the best best friend ever), Reynolds and Hagen nail every note, step, gag, and punchline. So if you're trying the Tom Cruise Method of dealing with depression and need a pick-me-up, this type of safe natural relief should work wonders.

BILLY LIAR
On my to-view list for quite a while, I finally got the chance to see BILLY LIAR [1963] in a theatre, and it did not disappoint. Habitual dreamers (and cowards) beware, however: this may hit too close to home. Possibly the quintessential illustration of both the reasons some choose to retreat into fantasy, and the gut-wrenching consequences for never returning to the real world, I know the final minutes will be sure to haunt me anytime I start thinking big but then fail to muster the courage for action. So, yeah, several times a day, then. But man, the dude was on the dang train. If only...
